Sci-fi & Fantasy writing advanced
Entry requirements: This course is intended for students who have already taken the introductory Sci-fi and Fantasy writing course.
Now that you have scratched the surface, delve deeper into the literature of the unreal. Explore gender systems, nonhuman consciousnesses, and the complicated feelings in a city during the coronation of an unloved king.
The structure for this course is identical to the first: three writing exercises, three weeks to work on your story, one concluding feedback session.
What you will learn
- How to explore complex themes like gender systems and nonhuman consciousness in fiction
- How to develop layered characters with complicated emotions
- How to structure and refine a short story through targeted writing exercises and feedback
- How to thrill and engage readers
NOTE: To ensure there is enough time for everyone, this course is capped at six students instead of eight. This also means the entry fee is slightly higher than the first course.
About the teacher
Max Urai (1991) studied Film Studies and Creative Writing. His short stories and essays have been published in De Gids, the Nederlandse Boekengids, and on Samplekanon, rekto:verso, and De Reactor. He served on the evening editorial board of Perdu, was selected for the Paris residency of deBuren, and in 2023 he received the C.C.S. Crone stipend from the City of Utrecht. He is currently working with publishing house De Geus on a science fiction novel about shopping malls.
