Botanical art & drawing

Botanical art & drawing

Back to courses overview

Entry requirements: None.

Are you fascinated by botanical gardens, unique plants, or even a single petal you find along the way? Do you have a soft spot for botany? You will learn how to combine botanical art and botanical drawing, both from observation and imagination.

We draw inspiration from classical botanical illustrations as well as imaginative gardens, such as the Classical Gardens of Suzhou. You’ll learn how to transform dried plants (flowers, leaves, and seeds) into visual expressions, but also how to draw shapes, proportions, and line contrasts. This course is all about visualizing the botanical world we love. We’ll experiment with colorful (dried) botanical materials and develop our sensory techniques in creating botanical art, and we’ll also work with pencil, fineliner, and drawing pen to develop botanical drawing skills.

Through short exercises, you will build a foundation and confidence. With a different theme each lesson, we will navigate the botanical world step by step. You’ll go home with a collection of sketches, experiments, and unique botanical creations!

About the teacher

Ying Yi Wu is a visual artist and storyteller, specialized in Botanical Art. She graduated from HKU in 2018. Inspired by nature, she enjoys working with botanical materials and exploring the sensory ways in which nature affects us. She dries flowers, leaves, and seeds herself, and uses them to create stories in the form of animals, portraits, symbols, landscapes, fantasies, and letters. In her classes, she sets stories in motion, immersing participants in a sense of togetherness and the sensory process of making.
